Note: Sioux, Cheyenne and Other Tribes: Related Topics and Bio Pieces To Come.
Readers will note that thus far my posts have mainly entailed events of 1876 viewed from the white man’s histories and perspectives. That is largely because I try to correlate posts to specific calendar dates with which they coincide from 1876, or 150 years ago. I have no intention to slight one viewpoint or overplay another.
Due to a cascade of coinciding event dates, birth dates, and other correlations, the current trend will continue, at least over the coming month. In part, that is simply the result of the white man’s habit of noting specific calendar dates in his histories and records for centuries.
One challenge here is that the native tribes followed more of a lunar and seasonal means of noting time (winters, snows, suns and moons, for example.) Because of that, they did not note specific dates of births or other events. That makes it more difficult to correlate those topics and profiles to our commonly used calendar.
I do plan to include biographical profiles and other posts relating to Sioux, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Arikara and other tribes. They will appear as they best fit into the build-up and chronology of events both before and after the Little Bighorn. I will do the same next year in regard to the Nez Perce as they assume a greater focus in 2027.
I do attempt to offer objective portrayals of events. I attempt neither to minimize wrongs on either side of the conflict, nor to maximize them in light of current popular social and political trends.
So, without apology, I will continue to profile events and individuals largely from the white man’s perspective as they coincide with chronological events, usually those from 150 years ago (1876.) I will do my best in coming posts to convey the perspective of the various Indian tribes and individuals as well, as time and opportunity allow. Regardless, I will try to offer objective presentations of history, noting both the rights and wrongs on either side of the conflict.
